Unplanned Events & Incidents
24 Jan (NucNet): Utility Bruce Power has confirmed to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) that there has been a discharge of water containing low levels of hydrazine into Lake Huron in Ontario.
The unplanned release, which occurred on 17 and 18 January 2012, at the Bruce A nuclear plant, was attributed to a leaking valve. In a statement the CNSC said the environmental impact is “minimal and localised” and there is no human health impact.
Hydrazine is a chemical used for corrosion control in piping systems. Its toxicity diminishes rapidly in contact with oxygen. Hydrazine is not a radioactive substance.
