21 Jun (NucNet): Swedish police confirmed this morning that a preliminary forensic report shows that explosive was present on a vehicle near the Ringhals nuclear power plant yesterday, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has said.
A statement said the explosive was discovered in a vehicle en route from the Ringhals industrial park into a protected area surrounding the four-unit Ringhals plant. The explosive did not enter the facility and there was no risk of an explosion because there was no detonation device.
SSM said Ringhals has “as a precaution” raised its security level to the second lowest level of 4. Sweden’s other two nuclear plants, Forsmark and Oskarshamn, have also raised their security levels, SSM said.
SSM said it is monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with police authorities and the Ringhals plant.
Plant operator Vattenfall said all vehicles entering the Ringhals security area pass through an extensive inspection procedure that includes checks for explosives. The explosives discovered yesterday could not have resulted in serious injury, the company said.
