12 Jul (NucNet): Kansai Electric Power Company (Kepco) said it aims to restart a second reactor at the four-unit Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture, central Japan, next week.

The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) confirmed that Kepco said Unit 4 is expected to reach criticality on 19 July.

The reactor, a 1,127 pressurised water reactor, is expected to start generating power on 21 July and to reach full power by 25 July.

On 2 July Ohi-3 became the first Japanese nuclear reactor to resume operation after all commercially operational reactors were taken offline for safety checks following the March 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi accident.

Units 2, 3 and 4 at the Ohi plant were all in commercial operation at the time of the accident. Ohi-1 was in the process of being restarted following a planned periodic inspection.
