7 Aug (NucNet): The Fukushima-Daiichi accident in Japan marked “the end of isolation” for the nuclear energy industry, which now needs new global leaders who can focus on lessons learned around the world, a conference has heard.

Westinghouse Electric president Ricardo Perez told the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) in the US that the nuclear sector needs young professionals to become the leaders in uniting a “cross-cultural” nuclear energy industry.

In a keynote speech to delegates, Mr Perez said “transcultural relations” are now a key issue for the industry and the nuclear sector’s new leadership must span multiple cultures and generations.

Mr Perez said that in order to succeed young leaders must learn by “dealing with problems and solving them”. He said learning how to motivate people from different cultures is a key point for a successful strategy.

Mr Perez said that transfer of technology has become fundamental as the industry is now aware of facing a “common threat”.

IYNC 2012 is being held in Charlotte, North Carolina, until 11 August. For details see www.iync.org.
