22 Nov (NucNet): Specialists from Atomenergoproekt, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, have finished “key field work” that needed to be carried out in order to write project documentation for Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

Rusatoom Overseas told NucNet that from February 2012 until November 2012 Atomenergoproekt carried out geodetic surveys, studies of soil and groundwater samples, and various other field work on and around the plant site at Akkuyu, on the Mediterranean coast in southern Turkey.

The results of the work, expected by the end of December 2012, will form the basis for data on natural and anthropogenic conditions at the site. This data will be used in the design process for the Akkuyu plant, Rusatom Overseas said.

Atomenergoproekt, an engineering company and designer of nuclear plants, is also preparing technical reports on engineering surveys that looked at geological, hydro-meteorological and environmental conditions at the site. These reports will be used for producing information for the plant construction licence application.

Russia and Turkey signed an intergovernmental agreement for cooperation on the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant at Akkuyu on 12 May 2010.

Rusatom Overseas said the plan is to build four 1,200-megawatt Generation III+ NPP 2006 pressurised water reactor units.

Unit 1 should be in commercial operation within seven years of the granting all documents and licences needed to start construction, Rusatom Overseas said.
