Nuclear Accounts For Largest Share Of EU Energy Production, Says Eurostat
There are there 131 nuclear reactor units in commercial operation in 14 EU member countries.

18 Feb (NucNet): Nuclear energy accounted for the largest share (29 percent) of gross domestic energy production in the European Union (EU) in 2012, according to figures released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

Nuclear was followed by renewables (22 percent), solid fuels (21 percent), gas (17 percent) and oil (10 percent), with total domestic production at 794 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), or 70.3 exajoules.

Gross inland energy consumption in the EU group of 28 countries (EU28) stood at 1,670 Mtoe in 1990, rose to a peak of 1,830 Mtoe in 2006 and fell to 1,680 Mtoe in 2012 – an eight percent drop between 2006 and 2012.

The energy dependence rate, which shows the extent a geographic area is dependent on energy imports, was 52 percent across the EU in 2012.

The five largest energy consumers in 2012 in the EU28 were Germany, France, UK, and Spain, with the dependence rate highest for Italy (81 percent), followed by Spain (73 percent), Germany (61 percent), France (48 percent) and the UK (42 percent).

However, the highest energy dependence rates across the 28 nations were registered in Malta (100 percent), Luxembourg and Cyprus (both 97 percent) and Ireland (85 percent).

The five main energy producers in 2012 were France, Germany, the UK, Poland and the Netherlands, which together accounted for 64 percent of total energy production in the EU28.

The largest nuclear energy producers in 2012 were France (110 Mtoe) and Germany (26 Mtoe).

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, there are currently 131 nuclear reactor units in commercial operation in 14 EU member countries.

The 14 countries with operating nuclear power stations are Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.
