24 Mar (NucNet): The incorporation of national and international guidance and good practices into the implementation of nuclear security measures is as important for cyber security as it is for physical security at nuclear installations, delegates at a summit said in a joint statement.

At the Nuclear Industry Summit (www.nis2014.org) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, almost 200 chief executive officers of nuclear companies endorsed a set of recommendations for improving nuclear security, saying routine evaluations of security should be an “integral part” of any security programme.

The recommendations highlight the need to incorporate national and international guidance and good practices in the implementation of all forms of nuclear security measures.

The recommendations call for “clear accountability and reinforcement of industry collaboration” for cyber security and information security.

At the summit’s opening ceremony, Henk Kamp, the Netherlands’ minister of economic affairs, said there is a need to keep both knowledge and computers “well secured”.

The recommendations also focus on the need to improve public and stakeholder confidence through high standards of transparency.

Stakeholder involvement and transparency play a key role in security, said Luis Echávarri, director-general of the Nuclear Energy Agency.

Roger Howsley, executive director of the World Institute for Nuclear Security, said safety and security are not the same thing and “we need to move away from secrecy”.

The joint statement which includes the recommendations will be submitted to world leaders who are meeting for the bi-annual Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague on 24 and 25 March.
