1 Apr (NucNet): Westinghouse Electric Company has completed “a significant milestone” at the Generation III+ AP1000 Sanmen-1 nuclear reactor under construction in China with the main control room declared operational by Sanmen Nuclear Power Company Ltd and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation.

Key instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, including the plant control system, the data and display system and the operations and control system, have been integrated and tested to ensure key plant functions can be monitored and controlled from the main control room, Westinghouse said.

Once these systems were integrated, the AP1000 plant’s digital control system underwent multiple commissioning activities, including the commissioning of the 220 volt and 10 kilovolt electrical systems, service and instrument air, and demineralised water systems.

Westinghouse, a subsidiary of Toshiba, delivered all of the I&C systems, as well as the design documentation, engineering services and mechanical equipment in support of this milestone.

Westinghouse said the integration of key I&C systems and the operability of the main control room will allow other key testing activities at the plant.

Once the plant is online and operating, certified reactor operators will work from the main control room to monitor and control plant processes.

Westinghouse is providing four AP1000 reactors in China: two at Sanmen in Zhejiang province and two at Haiyang in Shandong province. There are also four AP1000s under construction in the US, two at Voglte and two at Virgil C. Summer.
