30 Jul (NucNet): The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has extended for 12 months the power reactor operating licence for Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Darlington nuclear station on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

CNSC said in a statement that as a result of the 12-month extension a public hearing to consider the long-term renewal of Darlington’s operating licence, including the proposed refurbishment of all four Darlington reactor units, will take place in the summer and autumn of 2015.

OPG had asked for an extension to the operating licence to allow additional time to provide more comprehensive documentation, reflect “new CNSC expectations” and allow public engagement in the upcoming public hearing.

The operating licence for Darlington was to expire on 31 December 2014, but is now valid until 31 December 2015.

There are four Candu pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at the Darlington site, with plans for the construction of at least two more.
