E.On Confirms Decision To Prematurely Shut Down ‘Unprofitable’ Oskarshamn-1 And -2

14 Oct (NucNet): E.On, the majority owner of Swedish nuclear operator OKG, today confirmed plans to prematurely shut down Units 1 and 2 at the Oskarshamn nuclear power station in Sweden, a statement said.

The decision, taken at an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting, confirms an earlier decision by E.On to decommission the units, which it says are unprofitable.

A final decision on when to shut down Oskarshamn-1 will be taken when a schedule for decommissioning has been prepared.

There will be “no further investments” in Oskarshamn-2, which has been out of service since June 2013 for an extensive modernisation programme and will not be restarted.

The decision does not affect Oskarshamn-3, which should continue to operate until 2045, the statement said.

OKG managing director Johan Svenningsson said “planning has been initiated regarding adjusting the organisation based on the conditions that we now have to adapt to”.

OKG owns and operates the three Oskarshamn units, which together account for 10 percent of electricity generation in Sweden.

Oskarshamn-1 is a 473-megawatt boiling water reactor that began commercial operation in February 1972. Oskarshamn-2, a 638-MW BWR, began commercial operation in January 1975.
