10 May (NucNet): Kenya has begun a nuclear technology assessment study in order to determine the right technology to use to build nuclear power station, local media reports said.

Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board (KNEB) acting technical affairs director Winnie Ndubai said: “We are starting now to assess possible technologies to use in order to meet target of setting up a nuclear power plant when it is needed.”

The east African nation has said it wants to have its first nuclear plant in commercial operation by the end of 2027.

In September 2015 the International Atomic Energy Agency said Kenya had made significant progress in preparing to make decisions related to the introduction of nuclear power.

Separately, the Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board said it had signed an agreement with China General Nuclear Power Company on the development of nuclear energy in Kenya.
