US Company To Assess Nuclear Energy For Middle East

3 Dec (NucNet): US nuclear energy company Lightbridge and its partner Exelon Generation Company have signed a contract with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states to assess the development of civilian nuclear power in the Middle East.

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Lightbridge said it had been engaged to “assess the future nuclear energy landscape of these countries”.

Lightbridge will carry out various studies to identify and evaluate seven areas including nuclear regulation, site assessment, R&D, nuclear waste management and emergency response.

The studies will take place over a six-month period and will be completed by the second quarter of 2011.
