20 Aug (NucNet): A South Korean consortium led by Daewoo Engineering and Construction Company Ltd. has received permission from the Jordanian Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) to build a research reactor in the country, the South Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has said.

The 5-megawatt open-pool research reactor will be located at the Jordan University of Science and Technology at Irbid, about 70 km north of the capital Amman, and is expected to be completed by 2016.

Once it becomes operational, the reactor will allow for multi-purpose utilization including training and nuclear isotope production, KAERI has said.

The consortium obtained the permit after a two-year review from the JNRC.

The review was conducted jointly by the JNRC and the Korean Institute for Nuclear Safety (KINS).

In 2009, the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) announced that the Korean consortium was the successful bidder for the research project.

The consortium then went on to construct a training facility and lay the foundations for the construction of a research reactor.

KAERI was established in 1959 as the first science and technology research institute in Korea to be mandated to achieve energy self-reliance through nuclear technology.

The JNRC and the JAEC were established in 2007 as the successors to the former Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission, established in 2001. The JAEC is to promote and develop peaceful utilisation of nuclear energy in the country, and the JNRC is the effectively independent and adequately empowered regulatory body.
