15 Mar (NucNet): The Kanupp-2 and -3 nuclear power reactors under construction in Pakistan are scheduled to be completed in 2021 and 2022 respectively, International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Yukiya Amano was told on a visit to the country.

The IAEA said the combined capacity of the two 1,014-MW pressurised water reactor units will be about 10% of the country’s total. Both units are of the Chinese ACP-1000 design.

According to the IAEA, construction of Kanupp-2 started in August 2015 and Kanupp-3 in May 2016. The Kanupp nuclear station, also known as Karachi, has one existing Candu 90-MW reactor supplied by Canada. It began commercial operation in December 1972 and is the oldest operational Candu reactor.
