23 Apr (NucNet): Annual outages have begun at Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s two-unit Olkiluoto nuclear power station in Finland, the company said on 23 April 2018.

Olkiluoto-2 was disconnected from the grid on 22 April for a refuelling outage and Olkiluoto-1 (OL1) will be taken offline on 13 May for a maintenance outage.

The Olkiluoto-2 outage is expected to last 11 days. In addition to refuelling, various annual maintenance activities, repairs and tests will be carried out.

The outage at Olkiluoto-1 will last about 33 days with major work including replacement of the condenser and recirculation pumps.

In addition to TVO’s own personnel, up to 1,500 employees from external contractors will take part in the work.

TVO said electricity produced at the two 880-MW boiling water reactor units accounts for about 16% of Finnish electricity consumption and about 22% of the electricity produced in Finland. Olkiluoto-1 began commercial operation in October 1979 and Olkiluoto-2 in July 1972.
