14 Aug (NucNet): The Sanmen-1 Generation III+ Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactor unit in eastern China today reached 100% of its design power capacity for the first time, developer China State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) said.
In June 2018, Sanmen-1 became the world’s first AP1000 to attain a chain reaction. The unit was connected to the grid on 30 June 2018 and began generating electricity.
Construction of Sanmen-1 began in April 2009. The plant is capable of generating 1,117 MW of electricity when at full power. It is the first of a fleet of four new AP1000 plants in eastern China and will provide energy for the next 60-plus years.
There are also two AP1000s under construction at the Vogtle site the US.
