24 Sep (NucNet): A £9.4m research programme will link experts from the nuclear industry with UK academics and PhD students to tackle some of the challenges in dealing with radioactive waste, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority said today.

The NDA sad the research will span 40 projects lasting up to four years each, helping to build the next generation of nuclear experts and develop technical solutions.

The programme builds on a core grant of £4.6 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It is being supported by AWE, Cavendish Nuclear, Low Level Waste Repository Ltd, National Nuclear Laboratory, Radioactive Waste Management Ltd, Sellafield Ltd and TUV SUD Nuclear Technologies, who are all giving direct funding or expertise, use of facilities and researcher training. The NDA said this results in “a total funding pot” of more than £9m.

Research topics to be explored by the programme include integrated waste management, site decommissioning and remediation, spent fuel and nuclear materials.
