1 Nov (NucNet): Nucleoelectrica Argentina, the state-run operator of the Atucha-1 nuclear power unit in Argentina, has made progress in ageing management and preparedness for the long-term operation (LTO) of the unit, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) peer review mission said.

The Pre-SALTO (Safety Aspects of Long-Term Operation) mission, requested by Nucleoelectrica, focused on aspects essential to the safe long-term operation of Atucha-1, the IAEA said.

Atucha-1 is a 340-MW pressurised heavy-water reactor in commercial operation since 1974. Nucleoelectrica is preparing a license renewal application to the Argentinian Nuclear Regulatory Authority to extend the operating lifetime of the unit.

The 11-member IAEA team recommended that Nucleoelectrica establish and implement a comprehensive equipment qualification programme, apply a clear and unambiguous methodology for LTO assessment, and improve organisational processes to ensure timely implementation of all activities needed for safe LTO.

According to the IAEA, Atucha-1’s management confirmed its commitment to the recommendations and requested that the IAEA schedule a SALTO mission in November 2020.
