4 Dec (NucNet): Russia’s national nuclear regulator Rostechnadzor began on 3 December 2018 the last pre-startup inspection at the Novovoronezh 2-2 nuclear power plant under construction in western Russia, state-owned nuclear operator Rosenergoatom said in a statement.

The inspection is scheduled to end on 14 December 2018 and will focus on staff, reactor systems readiness, and documentation, the statement said.

A successful inspection will mean a licence can be granted allowing the physical startup of the unit, Rosenergoatom said.

Construction of Novovoronezh 2-2, a 1,114-MW VVER 1200 pressurised water reactor unit, began in July 2009. Its sister unit, Novovoronezh 2-1, Russia’s first Generation-III+ nuclear unit, began commercial operation on 27 February 2017.
