16 Jan (NucNet): Russia’s nuclear regulator Rostekhnadzor has issued a licence to extend the operating lifetime of Unit 3 at the Balakovo nuclear power station until 2048.
The 950-MW pressurised water reactor unit, a Russian VVER-V320, began commercial operation in 1989.
Rostekhnadzor said its lifetime had been extended in accordance with a federal programme to extend the operation of Russia’s nuclear reactor units.
Work began on the Balakovo-3 life extension in 2013 with a safety assessment. This was followed by work to “modernise or replace all the main components,” a statement said.
Balakovo-3 becomes the third unit at the four-unit station, near Saratov in southern Russia, to have its operating lifetime extended.
In October 2017 Rostekhnadzor issued a licence for the extended operation of Balakovo-2 by 26 years until 2043. The 950-MW PWR unit began commercial operation in October 1987.
In December 2015, Rostechnadzor extended the life of Balakovo-1, which began commercial operation in May 1986, until 2045. Balakovo-1 is also a 950-MW PWR.
