Key Work Completed On Inner Containment At Russia’s Kursk 2-1

11 Apr (NucNet): The first section has been installed of the inner containment for Unit 1 at the Kursk 2 nuclear power station under construction in western Russia, state nuclear corporation Rosatom said.

According to Rosatom the work took almost one month and was completed on schedule.

Kursk director Vyacheslav Fedyukin told local media last month that Kursk 2-1, the first of four reactors planned for the site, is likely to begin commercial operation between 2023 and 2024. Construction of the Generation III+ unit began in April 2018.

Kursk 2-1 will be the first of the VVER-TOI design of nuclear power plants. It was developed from the 1,200 MW AES-2006 pressurised water reactor.

Last year Rosatom said investment in the Kursk 2-1 project will exceed $6bn, but gave no further details of cost.

According to earlier reports, commissioning of the first two units at Kursk 2 was planned to be synchronised with the decommissioning of Units 1 and 2 at the existing station after 2021 and 2022.
