14 Mar (NucNet): Workers at the Vogtle nuclear station in the US state of Georgia have successfully placed the CA20 module into the Unit 3 nuclear island. Weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, the module is the heaviest “lift” of the project to date. The module will house various plant components, including the used fuel storage area.

Georgia Power said there has been “visible progress” on both Units 3 and 4, which both use Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology.

Georgia Power said it expects Vogtle-3 to begin commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2017, followed a year later by Vogtle-4.

Eight AP1000 reactors are under construction at Vogtle, Virgil C. Summer, and at Sanmen and Haiyang in China. Westinghouse said “significant progress” is being achieved in the construction of all eight units at these locations.
