France’s state-controlled utility and nuclear operator EDF declared a significant safety event on 18 December related to problems with electrical cell components that led to backup systems for the Penly-2 nuclear power plant west of Calais being unavailable.Nuclear regulator ASN said EDF had found 28 faulty electrical components at the 1,330-MW pressurised water reactor. ASN said it had rated the incident as level 2 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Events Scale (INES) scale that goes up to a maximum of 7.“This unavailability of several important safety materials had no consequences on people and the environment,” the watchdog said, adding EDF was in the process of replacing the defective components.
