An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team has completed a review of long-term operational (LTO) safety at Units 1 and 2 of Belgium’s Doel nuclear power plant, located near the northern city of Antwerp.

The seven-member team praised the improved level of organisation to support ageing management for LTO, the updating of a related safety analysis report, and improved competence and knowledge management for plant personnel involved in ageing management.

The team said further work is necessary to ensure that all required structures and components are included in the scope of ageing management during the LTO period and to complete implementation of the ageing management programmes for civil structures and components.

The IAEA mission, which was held between 25 and 28 June 2019, reviewed preparedness, organisation and programmes related to LTO. It was requested by the Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (Fanc).

Doel-1 and -2 are both 433-MW pressurised water reactor units, operated by Engie Electrabel. Doel-1 began commercial operation in February 1975 and Doel-2 in December 1975.

In December 2015, Fanc approved a 10-year extension of the units’ operating licences, provided that a set of safety conditions is fulfilled every year, the IAEA said.
