The US nuclear regulator is facing challenges because of the technical complexity of new nuclear technologies combined with their experimental nature, a report said.The report, by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Office of the Inspector General, said the NRC is being challenged to adapt its regulatory processes to accommodate technologies that cannot be readily assessed using existing approaches.It said that as part of its efforts to support the development of new nuclear technologies the NRC will NRC will work with the Department of Energy to support the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act.
