4 Apr (NucNet): The testing phase has begun in Germany for the instrumentation and control (I&C) system that will be installed at the Olkiluoto-3 EPR in Finland, reactor vendor Areva said.

The testing, which is taking place at Areva’s technical centre in Erlangen, began after Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima Oy approved the paperwork submitted by contractor Areva-Siemens, the statement said.

The I&C system, used to monitor and control the nuclear power plant, is a key component in reactor operations.

Once the testing is complete in Germany, the I&C cabinets will be installed in Olkiluoto-3 so further testing can be done before the reactor begins operating, the statement said.

Areva estimates that the Olkiluoto-3 project was 86 percent finished as of the end of December 2013. It said 2014 work will be focused on “critical path activities” in finishing the reactor. In February 2014, containment pressure and leak-tightness tests were completed.
