25 Jul (NucNet): The Fuqing-1 CPR-1000 reactor unit in China’s Fujian province reached first criticality on 24 July 2014, project owner China National Nuclear Corporation said in a statement.

The statement said that Fuqing-1 reached first criticiality at 05:00 am local time, marking the start of its operational phase.

The move paves the way for the unit to connect to the county’s national power grid and begin commercial operations soon, the statement said.

The Fuqing site has four CPR-1000 PWRs under construction. Unit 1 was the first to begin construction and is scheduled to be commercially operational by the end of the year.
