Saudi Conference To Address New Build In The Middle East

5 Sept (NucNet): A conference on 5 and 6 November 2014 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will address the Saudi Nuclear Energy Programme and bring together experts from the region to discuss the future of energy production in the country.

The Saudi Nuclear New Build Summit will focus on the development of nuclear energy in Saudi Arabia.

Conference organisers Konseptos said the summit will set out to to achieve consensus on technologies, investments and policies which will drive the Saudi Arabian Energy programme for the next two decades.

Saudi Arabia plans to be in the process of building two nuclear reactors by 2020, and have 16 built by 2030. There are plans to call for nuclear reactor bids from next year.

Organisers said the proposed investments per reactor will be 7 billion US dollars (5.3 billion euros) and collectively the government has earmarked USD 100 billion for 16 units over the next decade. It is planning for 17 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2032 to provide 15 percent of the country’s power.
