20 Mar (NucNet): Kyushu Electric Power Company has received permission from Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) for construction work to upgrade the basic design of its Sendai-1 and Sendai-2 reactors to meet higher standards set since the Fukushima-Daiichi accident, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum said. The approval was the second in a three-step process that all reactors have to go through before a restart. The final step involves inspection before operations commence. Both units are 846-megawatt pressurised water reactors. Sendai-1 began commercial operation in 1984 and Sendai-2 in 1985.
