Canada-India Nuclear Deal Comes Into Force

4 Oct (NucNet): Cameco Corporation and other Canadian uranium producers will be able to export to India for the first time under an agreement that came into effect this week.

Canadian natural resources minister Joe Oliver said the nuclear cooperation agreement between the two countries signed in 2010 allows Canadian companies to sell uranium and other nuclear supplies to the world’s 10th-largest economy for civilian use.

The Canadian government said in April 2013 that nuclear safety authorities in the two nations had reached an agreement that governs how the exports will be monitored.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will oversee the agreement and ensure nuclear exports are conducted under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
