14 Feb (NucNet): The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has received permission for pre-construction activity for Units 3 and 4 at the Barakah nuclear station, the company said.

The United Arab Emirates Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) granted authorisation for some preliminary construction work leading up to, but not including, pouring of first nuclear concrete, ENEC said. The approval will allow ENEC to install formwork, steel reinforcing bar, conduit, anchor bolts, plates and piping, the company said.

ENEC is building four APR1400 units at Barakah, in the western region of Abu Dhabi, with the first scheduled for completion in 2017.

Korea Electric Power Company (Kepco) won the contract to build the four units in December 2009.
