Japan Utilities Apply For Permission To Decommission Three Reactors

17 Feb (NucNet): Kansai Electric Power Company has submitted an application to Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority to decommission its 320-MW Mihama-1 and 470-MW Mihama-2 reactors. The utility said it expects the decommissioning work to cost about Yen 68bn (€541m, $602m) and to be completed in the fiscal year ending in March 2046. Both reactors were permanently shut down in April 2015. Japan Atomic Power Company also said it had applied to NRA for permission to decommission its 340-MW Tsuruga-1, which was also permanently shut down in April 2015. The company said it plans to complete the decommissioning work by the fiscal year ending in March 2040. According to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum five reactors in Japan have been designated by their operators for decommissioning. The five are Mihama-1 and Mihama-2; Tsuruga-1; Kyushu Electric Power Company’s Genkai-1; and Chugoku Electric Power Company’s Shimane-1.
