21 Dec (NucNet): Specialists working on the development of Atomenergoproekt’s Generation III+ VVER-TOI light water reactor unit are “in the final stage” of the project with documents being prepared for approval by state nuclear corporation Rosatom and Russia’s regulator Rostechnadzor.

Rosatom said for international certification documents will initially be submitted to the European Utility Requirements (EUR) organisation, which will confirm the reactor conforms to European requirements.

Rosatom said the EUR requirements are “fundamental” to many international tenders, in particular in China.

Atomenergoproekt, a Rosatom subsidiary, said the VVER-TOI unit will compete on the global market. The company said developers achieved a reduction in construction costs of 17 percent, as well as a reduction in operational costs of nearly 10 percent. The construction period per unit is around 48 months.

The 1,300-megawatt VVER-TOI (typical optimised, with enhanced information) design has an upgraded pressure vessel, improved core design to increase cooling reliability, and further passive safety features including a 72-hour grace period requiring no operator intervention after shutdown
