22 Apr (NucNet): South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has filed two nuclear site licence applications with the country’s National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), the NNR said.

The applications are for the Thyspunt site in Eastern Cape and the Duynefontein site in Western Cape, a statement said.

The NNR said both requests show the applicant’s intention to build and operate “multiple nuclear installations” and associated auxiliary facilities at these sites.

The plant and technology types have not been specified, the NNR said.

The NNR will review the applications to determine whether they comply with regulations and whether they should be accepted for “further technical assessments and public comment”, the statement said.

South Africa has two pressurised water reactors in commercial operation at Koeberg.

In June 2015, South Africa announced plans to build six to eight new nuclear power units by 2030 at a cost of about €75bn ($84bn).
