1 May (NucNet): Operator Engie Electrabel has shut down the Doel-1 nuclear plant in Belgium after the discovery of a small leak in the backup cooling water circuit, the country’s nuclear regulator said.

The Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control said the plant, which began commercial operation in February 1975, had been taken offline on 23 April 2018.

The leak did not pose any safety problem, but the 392-MW pressurised water reactor has been shut down for repairs, which will be carried out during a planned maintenance outage that was brought forward from 29 May to 27 April 2018.

FANC said it is still considering a rating for the incident on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.
