11 Jun (NucNet): Russia and China have signed two deals for the construction of four Generation III+ VVER-1200 units at the Xudabao and Tianwan sites during Russian president Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Beijing on 8 June 2018, said a statement by Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
According to the statement, two other nuclear deals were signed during the visit – an agreement to supply equipment, fuel, and services for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor pilot project, and a deal for the supply of radioisotope thermoelectric generator parts for China’s lunar exploration programme.
There are two Russian VVER-1000 and two VVER-1100 units at the Tianwan site in eastern China. The first three ones are in commercial operation and the last one under construction. China is also building two domestic CNP-1000 units, Tianwan-5 and -6.
Rosatom said the two new VVER-1200 units at the site will be Tianwan-7 and -8. They are expected to go online in 2026 and 2027, Rosatom said.
The other two VVER-1200 units will be built at a new site, Xudabao, in northeast China.
In April 2014, the Xudabao site was approved for the construction of two proposed Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power units with the option of building four more.
In its statement, Rosatom referred to the new VVER units at the site as Xudabao-3 and -4 and said commercial operation is scheduled for 2028.
