23 Nov (NucNet): State-owned China National Nuclear Corporation is capable of building more than 10 new nuclear power units a year and “multiple” new sites are fully prepared for construction,” company president Yu Jianfeng said at a press conference.

Mr Yu gave no further details of the new sites, but the country had ambitious nuclear plans with an official target of 58 GW of installed nuclear capacity by 2020, up from almost 36 GW produced by 46 operational reactor units today.

According to Shanghai-based energy research company Nicobar, China’s goal is to have 110 nuclear units in commercial operation by 2030, but this target is likely to be adjusted in the next Five-Year Plan, the first draft of which will appear in 2019.

China has similar ambitions to sell its nuclear services overseas. According to Nicobar, China has signed agreements and memoranda of understanding to explore civil nuclear cooperation with more than 20 countries.

CNNC chairman Wang Shoujun recently attended a series of meetings in Jordan and signed an agreement to push for bilateral nuclear power projects. The company announced plans earlier this year to increase its cooperation with Ghana, which is planning to build its first nuclear power plant.

CNNC is one of the developers of the HPR1000, or Hualong One, nuclear power plant, four of which are under construction in China at Fuqing-5, Fuqing-6, Fangchenggang-3 and Fangchenggang-4. There are also Hualong one reactors planned for Pakistan, Argentina and the UK.
