The rotor of the high and intermediate pressure cylinder for the Arabelle steam turbine manufactured by GE Steam Power has been delivered for Unit 1 of the Akkuyu nuclear power station in southern Turkey, according to project developer Rosatom.

Rosatom, which is building the four-unit Akkuyu nuclear station near Mersin on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast, said the 107-tonne component, which is the largest in the turbine set, arrived onsite in mid-March 2021. It was manufactured by US-based GE Steam Power at its Belfort factory in France.

The steam turbine rotor is a key component to any powerplant. It allows the transfer of the turbine rotating movement to the generator, enabling the electrical output.

The $20bn Akkuyu nuclear station will have four Generation III+ VVER-1200 units with the first expected to come online in 2023 and a further unit starting every year afterwards.
