26 Mar (NucNet): Areva and the Democratic Republic of Congo have signed an agreement on uranium prospecting and mining.
The agreement, signed by Areva chief executive officer Anne Lauvergeon and Congolese minister of mines Martin Kabwelulu, includes the creation of a mixed commission which will develop a technical prospecting programme. The work will begin with a detailed inventory of mining sites.
Areva said Congo’s size and geographical profile have given it major uranium reserves.
Ms Lauvergeon was visiting Congo as a member of the delegation joining French president Nicolas Sarkozy on a visit to Kinshasa.
