14 Jun (NucNet): Areva of France has signed a contract for several million euros with the Technical University of Munich in Germany to supply fuel elements for the FRM2 (also known as FRM II) research reactor.

Commissioned in 2004, the 20-megawatt FRM2 reactor was designed and manufactured by Areva GmbH, the group’s subsidiary in Germany. It is dedicated to the production of neutrons for scientific research in the nuclear, industrial, and medical domains.

Areva said the university intends to use the reactor to “reinforce” production of the molybdenum-99 and technetium-99 radioisotopes by 2015. These radioactive elements are some of the most commonly used in the world for medical imaging, Areva said.
