27 Apr (NucNet): The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) has renewed Areva’s contract to continue as operator of its Aube low-level and intermediate-level waste storage centre in eastern France after a bidding process involving five companies.

Areva did not say how much the contract was worth, but a statement said it had been set for a minimum of three years and could be extended until 2017.

Areva has been operator for 20 years of the Andra facility, which houses radioactive waste mainly from the maintenance, operation and dismantling of nuclear installations.

Areva also announced today that it will be part of the Nuclear Waste Partnership organization that was recently awarded a US Department of Energy (DOE) contract to manage and operate the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.

The WIPP site disposes of the nation’s defence-related life-long waste with medium activity.
