6 Jun (NucNet): Argentina’s Atucha-2 nuclear reactor achieved first criticality on the morning of 3 June 2014, Argentina’s Ministry of Federal Planning, Public Investment and Services said.
After the first nuclear chain reaction was initiated, several tests were carried out at different power levels to verify the performance of all systems, the ministry said.
Atucha-2 is a 745-megawatt (gross) pressurised heavy water reactor designed by the German company KWU. Construction started in 1981 but was suspended between 1994 and 2006.
