UK-based multinational Atkins has been awarded a £5m contract for work at the site of the planned Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, England.

The company, a member of SNC-Lavalin Group, said the contract represents the first programme of construction work at the proposed nuclear station, which is to be built for EDF Energy immediately to the north of the existing Sizewell B station, on the Suffolk coast.

The site will comprise of two UK EPR units with a gross electrical output of approximately 1,670 MW per unit, giving a total site capacity of approximately 3,340 MW. Once operational, Sizewell C will be able to generate enough electricity to supply about 20% of the UK’s homes.

The contract is for “enabling works”, which are defined as all work necessary to prepare the site for the main civil works and marine works.

Objectives include determining the best layout and sequence of the construction for the site, and specifying what site facilities and infrastructure will be needed until the station begin commercial operation.

Earlier this week the British government set out proposals to explore the use of the regulated asset base (RAB) approach to attract “significant private investment” for future nuclear power in the UK.

The new funding structure could be used for Sizewell C, a project which was left in doubt after criticism of the costs surrounding the Hinkley Point C project in Somerset.
