9 Jan (NucNet): Unit 3 at the Barakah nuclear station in the United Arab Emirates is 62% complete and Unit 4 is 35% complete and ahead of schedule, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) said in a statement on 7 January 2017.

Enec said recent construction achievements include the setting in place of Barakah-3’s reactor containment building liner dome section, effectively installing the roof of the structure which now houses the reactor vessel. At Barakah-4, the turbine generator operating deck and the setting of the last reactor containment liner plate rings have been completed.

Work to pour the concrete and complete the reactor containment building is progressing with completion expected in the first quarter of 2017, Enec said.

At Unit 4, work has begun on erecting the turbine building and the interior and exterior concrete for the Unit’s reactor containment building is now being poured. The reactor pressure vessel will be installed in mid-2017.

There are four South Korean APR-1400 reactors under construction at Barakah. The facility is scheduled for completion in 2020, with construction having started in 2012. With four reactors online, the facility will deliver up to a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs.

Overall, construction of Units 1 to 4 is around 75% complete, Enec said.
