UK utility British Energy (BE) said today that it has the go-ahead to extend the lifetimes of its two advanced gas-cooled reactor units at the Dungeness B nuclear power plant by 10 years.
The announcement said the company had “completed the necessary technical and economic evaluation, as well as the requisite external reviews”, that will see the two 555-megawatt units continue operating until 2018.
BE said earlier in 2005 that it was studying the financial costs of upgrade work required to extend the operation of Dungeness in Kent, south-east England, as part of a possible programme to extend operations at all eight of its UK nuclear plants [see News No. 82, 12th May 2005].
