23 Mar (NucNet): The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has issued a “request for action” asking operators of nuclear facilities in Canada to review initial lessons learned from the nuclear accident in Japan and re-examine safety cases with a particular emphasis on defence in depth.

The commission has asked operators to look at external hazards such as seismic events, flooding, fire and extreme weather; measures for prevention and mitigation of severe accidents; and emergency preparedness.

The CNSC also asked operators to report on implementation plans for short-term or long-term measures to address any “significant gaps”.

The request for action has been sent to operators of all Class I nuclear facilities, and uranium mines and mills asking them to report back by 29 April 2011.
