30 Dec (NucNet): China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) has received government approval to carry out an early-stage study for Lufeng nuclear power plant in the south of China.

In a statement on its website CGNPC said it plans to build two CPR-1000 pressurised water reactor units in the first phase of Lufeng in eastern Guangdong province.

Lufeng could eventually house six 1,000 MW reactor units, CGNPC said, citing approval guidelines from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

CGNPC said it had 25 reactors with a total capacity of 28,000 megawatts (28 gigawatts) that had received either initial or final approval from the NDRC.

There are 13 nuclear units in operation in China – 12 units in commercial operation and 1 unit, Qinshan 2-3, in the process of undergoing startup test operations. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency there are 26 units under construction.
