‘Commission Report Discriminates Between Low-Carbon Energy Sources’
Foratom has called for ‘a fact-based debate’ on nuclear energy in Europe.
An expert report published by advisors to the European commission discriminates between energy technologies because it does not apply the same criteria equally to different low-carbon power sources, the Brussels-based nuclear industry group Foratom has said. The report, compiled by the commission’s technical expert group on sustainable finance, said evidence on the potential substantial contribution of nuclear energy to climate mitigation objectives was “extensive and clear” and the potential role of nuclear energy in low-carbon energy supply is “well-documented”.However, it said the evidence about nuclear energy is complex and more difficult to evaluate when it comes to potential significant harm to other environmental objectives, including waste management, biodiversity, water systems and pollution.
