China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced construction progress at two indigenous Hualong One nuclear plants with the inner dome of the containment building installed at Changjiang-3 and the outer dome installed at Zhangzhou-1.

There are two Hualong one, or HPR1000 plants under construction at Changjiang, in the island province of Hainan in southern China. Construction of Chiangjiang-3 began in March 2021 and of Changjiang-4 in December 2021.

According to CNNC they are scheduled to be fully operational in 2027.

At the Zhangzhou nuclear station, in Fujian province, southeast China, there are also two Hualong One Units under construction. Construction of Zhangzhou-1 began in October 2019 and of Zhangzhou-2 in September 2020.

The main function of the Hualong One’s double-layered containment building is to ensure the integrity and leak tightness of the reactor building. It plays a key role in the containment of radioactive substances.

The Hualong One is an indigenous pressurised water reactor unit. It incorporates elements of China National Nuclear Corporation’s ACP1000 and China General Nuclear’s ACPR1000+ reactor designs.

China has 10 Hualong One units under construction domestically at four sites – two each at Zhangzhou, Changjiang, Fangchenggang, Taipingling and Sanaocun (also known as Zhejiang Sanao and San’ao).

It has two Hualong One units in commercial operation at Fuqing in Fujian province.

There are two Hualong One plants in operation outside China, both in Pakistan at the Kanupp nuclear station, also known as Karachi.
