2 Nov (NucNet): Czech nuclear equipment manufacturer Skoda JS is in the “early stages of negotiations” with Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom for future supply contracts for nuclear new build in Vietnam.

Skoda JS project manager Roman Zdebor told NucNet that the construction of Russian-built VVER units in the future was likely to include Czech companies in the supply chain.

He said Czech suppliers were taking part in the construction of two units in Vietnam, Ninh Thuan-1 and Ninh Thuan-2.

On Sunday Russia and Vietnam signed an agreement for the construction of the 1,000-megawatt VVER units.

Speaking at the VVER 2010 international conference in Prague in the Czech Republic, Mr Zdebor said it was “assumed” that Czech companies would also participate in more Rosatom new build contracts outside Russia.

He said this has been “assured at the highest level” and that Rosatom is looking to “enhance cooperation more generally” with Czech companies.

Skoda JS is responsible for organisational and engineering activities at the Temelin-3 and -4 construction site, alongside Atomstroyexport’s St. Petersburg subsidiary.

Three nuclear vendors have qualified to submit formal offers for the construction of units 3 and 4 at Temelin, with selection of the successful supplier scheduled for 2012.

The three are Westinghouse Electric Corporation with its AP1000 reactor unit; Areva with its European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR1600); and a consortium comprising of Skoda, Atomstroyexport and Gidropress with the MIR (Modernised International Reactor) 1200 unit.

The Czech Republic has six commercially operational reactor units: four VVER-440 units at Dukovany nuclear plant and two VVER-1000 units at Temelin.
